History
The National School for Adults (ENAD) has its origins in a very simple observation: in Luxembourg, too many pupils leave school without a diploma or certificate. While the reasons for dropping out of school are many and varied, something else is entirely clear: a certificate or diploma is seen as an essential entry ticket to the world of work.
In May 2009, the Chamber of Deputies passed a law creating a 2nd Chance School (E2C) in Luxembourg.
Since March 2011, the E2C in Luxembourg aimed to address “learning losses” in languages and mathematics, and to create a pre-professional framework. Initially established in Pétange and then in Luxembourg-Hollerich, the E2C allowed young adults to return to the national education system to obtain a certification recognized in the context of secondary education or vocational training, or to reintegrate into initial education programs.
On August 1, 2018, the decision was made to recognize the growing importance of reintegrating adults into education and to give the school in Luxembourg and abroad greater visibility by renaming it the “National School for Adults.”
Over time, many additional training programs have been added to the original offering: the work-study educator class (GEA), the Diploma for Access to Higher Education (DAES), integration classes for young adults (CLIJA), and several vocational programs, mainly in the fields of personal assistance and craftsmanship. At the same time, ENAD has continuously expanded: today, the school welcomes more than 700 learners and is located on four different sites: one in Esch-Belval and three in Luxembourg City.
